Panzers and Starships!

It's taken months of on/off work to do but I'm finally at a place where I feel I can show off my Panzer IV model in all its glory. Turntables will follow shortly!

Many thanks to Henning Sanden who taught me a thing or two about rendering.

Here's a little update of the Hiigaran Battlecruiser I'm working on. Modeling is pretty much done and texturing has commenced.

Space ship (WIP)

Here is a work-in-progress model of a space ship that I'm working on for my personal show reel. It is a Hiigaran Battlecruiser from the video game Homeworld 2 of which I am a big fan. I'm going for a relatively low-poly model as it is in the game itself.

Next week I'm uploading a turntable for my finished Panzer model.

New season, new spare-time painting.

I present to you this gloomy man:

Tank update.

Here's a little update on the tank I've ben working on in my spare time. It's taken a while, but the weapons, hull components and cupola are now mostly done. I've also modeled most of the wheels.

It's been challenging, but I'm pushing on!

Quadruped and Color studies.

Here's the results of my Quadruped Project. I did the modelling, rigging, shading, lighting, rendering and compositing.

Animation by Mie Pedersen

This painting was made in a color class. I worked on it after the class in my spare time.

The Serpent

I finally pushed myself to finish this painting I was working on.

Juan Díaz's Blacksad comic was a huge influence.

ZBrush shenanigans.

My class has been learning how to use the sculpting software ZBrush recently. Its basically like working with clay, except you don't get your hands dirty :)

Some pics:

Our first assignment was to do a skull.

Here is a character I'm working on for the Trailer project (which you will get more info on later this semester).

Until next time!

Old and New

Now that the summer is over its time for an update!

First up is a picture that I made last spring in a Concept Development class with the great Peter Chan. I forgot to post it then so here it is:

And then we have this picture on which I am working in my spare time (Its still work in progress).

New painting.

The picture depicts a Norman castle towering above the English countryside. I used a mixture of digital painting and photographic textures.

Enjoy!

Biped Project results!

I thought it was about time to post some fresh stuff. For the last 5 weeks I and my fellow classmates have been working on the "Biped Project", which is all about creating a realistic or semi-realistic bipedal humanoid (two arms, legs and one head).

Before any drawings can be made one has to come up with a backstory.

My character's name is Echo and she is a former factory worker from the human colony of Cassander VI on the fringes of human space. Her planet was attacked by an alien race known as the Dromidians when hostilities broke out between them and humanity. the Dromidians overran Cassander in a matter of hours and killed or enslaved most of the inhabitants. Echo is one of those that survived the attack and must now use any means neccessary to stay alive.

And now for some concept art:

The character is mostly inspired by Ellen Ripley from Alien, Lara Croft form Tomb Raider and Isabelle from Predators. I was striving for a look that suggested toughness and self-sufficiency without making her look mannish.

This was my final concept for Echo.

Next I had to do some color concepts.

This was the final image I chose for the next phase which was the clay maquette.

Turnaroun image for reference.

The lighting wasn't particularly good when I took these pictures :( but they convey the general idea.

And now for the 3D part!

The whole thing...

And a closeup of the head. We managed to get a little sculpting done in Autodesk Mudbox, in my case on the hair and face.

That's all folks! Overall I've learned a lot from these past weeks and its been a wonderful experience.

Extreme rendering!

I just finished a week of rendering and design theory. Here are the results:

The first day we were given several hours to make a picture using the following concept as a guide: Atlantean weaponry.
Not feeling content to make a simple weapon, I created a whole warsuit:

In the next assignment we were supposed to use atmospheric effects such as smoke, fog or steam to generate a sense of space in a picture. The theme was Steampunk, film noir and "chase".

In the third and final picture of the week the theme was "fairy city". I'm not quite as satisfied with this one as the one before. Nevertheless I think I did an okay job.

I had a really nice time this week and, like in all the design classes, I learned so much!

That's all folks!

Until next time...

4550 Project - Overview and final image.

So this busy semester has finally come to an end. I have to say I'm pretty proud of the outcome of this final assignment of the year.

First we have the concept picture which I used as a guide. I didn't quite get the positioning right in the 3D model though :(

Here is a greyscale light test to show... well... the lighting.

And here is the FINAL IMAGE in all it's glory!

Weeks 45 - 50, Character Design.

Below is a character design I made as part of the 45-50 assignment. We basically have to make a character and background in 6 weeks, taking it from basic sketches to full 3D render in that time.

Here is my turn around for the character.

The style guide was the work of famous american puppeteer Jim Henson who created such shows as The Muppet Show, Sesame Street and the darker, more mature films The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth.

The character was supposed to be a "mediterranean villager" and mine became the Inn/barkeeper of the town.

Assignment extravaganza!

Here are some pictures I have made over the last couple of months.

This picture I made during a drawing course. The theme was "robot graveyard" and we had to use values to make it look interesting.

The next picture was also made in drawing class. We were given several photos of different buildings in different architectural styles and we were to make a unique piece where all the styles would combine. Behold the Chimaera castle!

Here are some abstract pieces from the design class. The idea was to play with lines and shapes to make an interesting picture describing a concept or feeling. The upper one is supposed to describe romance and the lower one represents jazz music.

This is a clay maquette made in the "introduction to design" class. The background was later added in photoshop. The character is a wolf from Nei Gaiman's story The Wolves in the Walls.

This is a matte-painting made in Photoshop class. The building is the treasury in the ancient city of Petra situated in modern day Jordan.

Another picture made in photoshop class. It was supposed to be the prelude to a fight between the McDonalds mascot Happy and a character of our own choice.

This is my contribution to a class picture for school. Nothing fancy, but it does the trick!

New comic in the works!

Well, it's been some time since I posted new material, so i thought I'd post a panel from a new comic I'm working on as an artist.

The comic is called "Landnáma" and is a fictionalized version of Hrafna-Flóki Vilgerðarson's journey to Iceland and the perils he and his companions must face in the new land.

The script and story is written by Alexander Dan Vilhjálmsson.

Storyboard

Hell! It's about time...

I made this wonderful storyboard for my portfolio.

Enjoy!

This fish is probably smarter than any human, having discovered the shrimp-drawn carriage, the treadmill and the electric motor in one day!

Update

Well. Here are some new pictures:

The first one is a bizarre living room in a fairy palace. The fae don't really bother to think about gravity when designing their abodes in the otherworld...

I got some feedback on my stuff from the powers-that-be at the animation school an they said that my pictures could use a little more movement so i made another picture of Aquila which i hope qualifies as dynamic.

Finally. I have a picture that i made for the purpose of showcasing my knowledge of perspective

New pics.

A couple of new pictures:

Gunnvor is the daughter of a frost giant who was killed by the god Thor at the giant Thrym's wedding reception. Having no family to speak of left, she now aimlessly wanders the woods of Jotunheim. At first she swore to avenge her father's death but then realized it was an impossible feat.

After all. Who is she to even dream of defeating the god of thunder?

And here is a picture i made of a flotilla of starships.
